A POSTAL HISTORY OF ZWOLLE

SWEDEN

The postage consisted of the inland postage to Hamburg or Helsingør plus the postage to the Dutch Border Post Office. For the route in the Netherlands, the applicable domestic postal rates applied there.

The postage from Stockholm to Hamburg, Helsingør, Stralsund or other Border Post Offices was up to 1/3 lod (about 5 grams) in Swedish skilling banco (= in paper money; until 30-11-1803 in skilling specie):

Letter from Zwolle to Gothenburg, Sweden, 9-9-1861. Sent via Hamburg (on reverse oval stamp HAMBURG and a framed handstamp of the Swedish Post Office in Hamburg HAMBURG / K.S.P.A.(D). (Königlich Schwedische Post Anstalt. (D) indicated that the letter was sent to Sweden via Denmark). Rate Sweden via Hamburg in effect from 23-6-1852, 0 - 15 wigtjes: 60 cents. Franked with 6 x 10 cents issue 1852 (plate VII) Addressee's name unfortunately cut out (Van Dieten auction 645, 2021).
